ORIENTATION AND MENTAL TOUGHNESS:
YouthBuild USA modeled programs, like B.U.I.L.D. Staten Island require students to partake in Mental Toughness prior to enrolling in the program. Mental Toughness is key to setting the tone and expectations for a successful program year and for making the final selection of young people who will be enrolled in the program. Mental Toughness is also coupled with orientation and provides youth awareness of the programs environment, traditions and opportunities. This training is designed to produce human transformation in young adults lacking in personal, social, and academic development; who have been historically denied an opportunity to develop a mastery of life skills. During Mental Toughness students participate in workshops, listen to motivational speakers, engage in physical activity and face self-discovery. Through this process, students test their mental and physical strengths, learn how to become a team member with their fellow B.U.I.L.D Staten Island family, and engage in communication and thinking skill activities. In the end, students are motivated, inspired and empowered to be something and do something. Mental Toughness is also the place to build relationships between students and the staff and to build a cohesive, safe and supportive peer group combined with love and respect.
In order to for applicants to be considered by the Historic Tappen Park Community Partnership's B.U.I.L.D Program, you must meet the program requirements stated above and submit all required documentation for consideration.
